Vickys Bento Box Eggs (I know lol) step by step
- I know, you're shocked I'm using eggs lol.
- Now that's out of the way, put your eggs in a pan and cover with water. For 4 eggs add 1 tablespoon of salt, it'll help loosen the egg from the shell later and it won't make the eggs taste salty so don't worry.
- Bring to a rolling boil and let them sit for 3 minutes like that. Remove them from the heat, put the lid on and let them sit for another 10 minutes.
- Drain the water then run the eggs under cold water until you can handle them without burning your fingers. This helps with peeling also. These are the moulds.
- Tap the eggs all around and carefully peel off the shell. If you split the eggs they won't work in the moulds so be gentle. Prepare your moulds.
- Now place the eggs pointed end down into the moulds and close the lids. Wet the moulds a bit first so the eggs don't stick.
- Put them into iced water then into the fridge for at least half an hour. Keep in the moulds as long as you can before they go in your bento box or they'll lose their shape if you store them too long without the moulds. To release just open the moulds and ease the eggs out.
- Meanwhile you can make a bento chick! Using a sharp knife make a zigzag pattern around another egg. Don't dig the knife in too far or you'll damage the yolk.
- Squeeze gently and you'll see any bits of the white that need to be cut a bit more.
- When it's all loosened pull off the top.
- Cut eyes from a sheet of nori and make a beak from a small triangle of carrot.
- Place in your bento box with your other lunchtime goodies!.
- Next time I'll show how to make cute rice ball characters!.
